This timeline follows the life of Inigo de Loyola better known today as Saint Ignatius of Loyola. From his noble birth to the founding of the Society of Jesus to his cannonization, Saint Iggy as he is lovingly referred to by some, lived an amazing life that still impacts the world today.

The Birth of Inigo de Loyola
Inigo was "probably born on in 1491" (O'Malley 6). His family was of minor nobility and lived in the Basque region of Spain.

Inigo's Life Changes at the Battle in Pamplona
While defending the city of Pamplona, Inigo's leg is severely injured by a cannonball. He is sent to his family's castle in Loyola to recuperate.

The Benedictine Abbey in Montserrat
Desiring to do penance before his pilgrimage to Jerusalem, Inigo traveled to the Benedictine Abbey in Monsterrat. (Maher).

The Cave at Manresa and The Spiritual Exercises
After laying down his sword in Monsterrat, Inigo travels to Manresa. He spends months there in a cave where he lives a very simple life of prayer, fasting, and the denial of any comfort.

Inigo Goes Back to School
Leaving Manresa, "Ignatius arrives in Jerusalem in 1523 but is forced to leave by the Franciscan custodians, who wisely perceived such a strong-willed pilgrim as a liability" (Maher).

Inigo Meets his Companions and Becomes Ignatius.
While enrolled at the University of Paris, Inigo befriended fellow "friends of the lord" Pierre Favre, Franscisco Xavier, Diego Lainez, Alfonso Salmeron, Nicolas Bobadilla, and Simao Rodriguez. (O'Malley, 1.) It is during this time he officially becomes "Ignatius" leaving behind his given name of "Inigo". (Maher.)

Ignatius is Ordained a Priest
After graduation, Ignatius and his companions were ordained priests in Venice while awaiting passage to the Holy Land. (O'Malley 2). Because of political turmoil at the time, Ignatius' plans fail again and he and his companions travel to Rome.

The Society of Jesus is Approved by Pope Paul III
"On September 27, 1540, the Society of Jesus officially came into existence" (O'Malley 3).

Ignatius is elected first Superior General of the Society of Jesus
Ignacio was elected the first superior general on April 19, 1541, a position he held until his death in 1556.

Death of Ignatius
When Ignatius passed away, there were 1,000 men in the Jesuit Order, over 33 schools, and missions in Africa, Asia, South America, Europe and North America.
