Founding of Binondo

On March 28, 1594, the adjoining island of Minondoc was annexed to the village of Baybay or what is now the San Nicholas District. The island’s original owners, Don Antonio Velada and his wife Doña Sebastiana del Valle sold it to Governor General Luis Perez Dasmariñas (son of the slain governor), which he donated to the Christian Chinese community. This land-grant for a Chinese colony reserved strictly for Chinese Christians was to become the Arrabal of Binondo, which in two centuries would become the richest town in the Philippines.

1603 Sangley Massacre

In 1603 a Chinese revolt took place led by Juan Suntay, a wealthy Catholic Chinese. It was put down by joint Spanish and native forces led by Luis Pérez Dasmariñas. In the aftermath most of the 20,000 Chinese that composed the colony were killed. The revolt took place right after a visit to Manila by three official Chinese representatives who disclosed they were searching for "a mountain of gold". This strange claim prompted the Spanish to conclude that there was an imminent invasion from China in the making. At the time the local Chinese outnumbered the Spaniards by twenty to one, and Spanish authorities feared that they would join the invading forces.

1664 Sangley Revolt

In a journal by Fray Alberto Collares found in the rectory of Chinatown, the following is recorded: ‘Today, 6 May 1664, the Sangleys staged a revolt, which was occasioned mainly by the public games in this Chinatown. Those who lost became so angry and so desperate that they instigated the uprising. I have witnessed three revolts during my 31 years of stay in these islands, and all of them were staged by Sangleys who had lost the game and had ended up dirt poor…’

British Occupation of Manila

The British occupation of Manila between 1762 and 1764 was an episode in Philippine colonial history when the Kingdom of Great Britain occupied the Spanish colonial capital of Manila and the nearby principal port of Cavite. The resistance from the provisional Spanish colonial government established by members of the Royal Audience of Manila and their Filipino allies prevented British forces from taking control of territory beyond the neighbouring towns of Manila and Cavite. The British occupation was ended as part of the peace settlement of the Seven Years' War.

Hospital de Chinos founded

Precursor to the Chinese General Hospital today, Capitan Carlos Palanca Tanchueco, together with wealthy Chinese businessmen Chan Guan and Mariano Velasco were touched by the plight of their sick and poor countrymen. Together they donated and raised funds to construct a medical clinic, where treatment was free of charge. It initially catered to Chinese immigrant patients only, who were not used to western medicine and have language barrier. It later expanded into a hospital and extended its services to everybody. The charity funds came from a monthly tribute on Chinese stores and a special fee on Chinese residents coming from China to settle in the country. Two years later, the “Hospital de Chinos” was registered under the Spanish Government.
