STEM Explorer Timeline

The STEM Explorer Project is made possible by a $4 million dollar grant from the Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation. It is a project designed to reach out to students, teachers, and community members in the Great Lakes Bay region to heighten interest in the importance of STEM education.

Equipped with cutting edge technology, the STEM Explorer vehicle will make over 120 visits to Great Lakes Bay Region middle and high schools. It will also work with thousands of community members at local events each year.

Multiple stakeholders came together to discuss the creation and implementation of the new STEM Explorer project.

Workshops with Area Teachers and Professionals

Great Lakes Bay area teachers and business professionals came in to participate in workshops designed to help determine how the STEM Explorer could be best implemented in local middle schools and high schools.

Defining of Modules / The Search for a Program Coordinator

Teams of Delta and K-12 faculty came together to define the modules that would be used on the STEM Explorer vehicle. The hiring committee set out to find a STEM Explorer coordinator. The job was defined, posted, and the search began.

Faculty Leadership

Various faculty within the Delta College STEM divisions were identified to lead development of various modules. Equipment for the STEM Explorer was determined and ordered. The search for the coordinator continued.

Vehicle Ordered / Interviews

The manufacturer of the STEM Explorer vehicle was identified and the ordering and assembly of the vehicle gets underway. The interviews take place for the new STEM Explorer Coordinator.

STEM Explorer Coordinator Hired! / New STEM Websites Under Development

Delta College hires Nathan Elder as the new STEM Explorer Coordinator. The coordinator begins the process of updating the STEM and STEM Explorer websites. The teams continue to develop and build the middle ("Surface Exploration") and high school ("Deep Dive") modules.

Continued "Deep Dive" and "Surface Exploration" Module Development

Design teams present preliminary ideas to the STEM Explorer Coordinator for review. Delta College division chairs briefed on the progress of the STEM Explorer program.

Curriculum Development and Refinement for "Deep Dive" and "Surface Explorations".

During this time the curriculum for the modules will be finalized. Creation of the curriculum will be a team effort. Those involved will be the STEM Explorer Coordinator as well as the design teams (K-12 + Delta faculty).

Building of Modules Finalized

All modules will be built in preparation for the delivery and outfitting of the STEM Explorer vehicle in December.

Vehicle Arrival and Outfitting / Social Media

The STEM Explorer vehicle will arrive from the manufacturer. The vehicle will be outfitted with state-of-the-art technology to help it accomplish its on of a kind purpose. The STEM Explorer social media pages will go online for the first time.

Vehicle and Module Testing

The STEM Explorer Coordinator ,the Director of The STEM Talent Intitute, and the Technical Trades and Manufacturing division chair will test the modules and equipment on the STEM Explorer vehicle. This is in preparation for pilot visits in March.

STEM Explorer Pilot Visits

The STEM Explorer will make numerous pilot visits to schools in the Great Lakes Bay Region. The vehicle might also travel to local events during this "break-in" period. The goal is to determine what kinds of adjustments or modifications need to be made before the vehicle rolls out full-time in August.

Professional Development Courses for Teachers: "Partnering with the STEM Explorer"

Teachers and other school personnel interested in becoming part of the STEM Explorer projects will be provided with professional development courses at Delta. One of the goals will be to provide guidance to school educators on what they can do to prepare their students for the STEM Explorer visits.
