Founding of Colonial New Hampshire

Colonial New Hampshire was founded in 1638; by John Mason and established by John Wheelwright. New Hampshire was an England Colony until 1776. When it joined the other 12 of the 13 colonies in rebellion against Great Britain and became the U.S. state of New Hampshire.

The charter establishing Dartmouth College was signed in 1769, by John Wentworth, who was the governor at the time. Dartmouth's founder was Rev. Eleazar Wheelock who started the College as a place to educate Native Americans.

New Hampshire becomes the 9th state; US Constitution is ratified by New Hampshire at a convention in Exeter. In June 21, New Hampshire becomes the ninth state. It was also one of the thirteen colonies before it became state.

The first US public library is founded in Peterborough,

America's first large public library was not legally established until 1852. In 1833 Reverend Abiel Abbot, Peterborough’s Unitarian minister, proposed the creation of Peterborough town library. The Peterborough Town Library’s claim to importance is not that it was the first library to which the public had access, for such libraries had existed before 1833.

Franklin Pierce of Hillsborough became the 14th U.S. President and is the only President to come from New Hampshire”He also served the Mexican war. Franklin Pierce married Jane Means Appleton in 1834. Franklin Pierce’s father is named Benjamin Pierce.

NH 18th Regiment in Civil War

New Hampshire's 18th Regiment led Unon troops into Richmond, VA during Civil War to try for victory. Although they all fought hard many died in battle and are now looked at and called heros.

1945- World War II ship In Portsmouth NH On May 7, 1945, the Allied vise slammed shut on what remained of Nazi Germany. With American, British, and French troops advancing from the west and the Soviets overrunning the eastern part of the country, the German high command had little choice but to surrender their battered forces.
