Animal Rights Timeline

Animal rights are rights believed to belong to animals to live free from use in medical research, hunting, and other services to humans. For the past two hundred years the journey to protect animals has come along way. Laws and organizations have been created in order to protect animals and their rights.

This timeline will demonstrate the changes in animal rights that have occurred since the 1800's. It will lead up to present day and will even show how things might be 20 years from now.

Eary 1800

During the early 1800's many people didn't care about animals. They were seen as creatures that didn't feel and didn't matter.

BENTHAM

Jeremy Bentham was the first person to use the philosophy of utilitarianism on animals. He was one of the first people to speak out against animal cruelty.

United Kingdom

The Cruelty to Animals Act was created in the U.K. and its purpose was to protect all animals from harm.

SINGER

Peter Singer helped promote the ideal that animals have feelings. He also said that, "Human 'speciesism' is no better than racism or sexism.

Lupper

Martin Tupper wrote a ballad known as Mercy to Animals: A Ballad of Humanity. His ballad showed how inhuman humans can actually be.

ASPCA

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was created by Henry Bergh.

Organization

The "Bands of Mercy" organization was created in order to inform young children of animal abuse.

Legislation

The Animals Protection Act was created in order to benefit all animals not just regular household pets. It provided protection from birds to farm animals.

Rhesus Monkeys

A man named Jonas Salk was determined to fine a polio cure at the cost 100,000 Rhesus monkeys. He ended up finding a vaccine, but his treatment toward the monkeys was brutal.

Animal testing

During the 1950's there was a rise in animal testing.

Legislation

The Animal Welfare Act was created in 1966. This act regulated the transportation and handling of small animals that were being used for testing purposes.

ALF

During this year the Animal Liberal Front was created.

PETA

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals was created so people could speak out against cruelty to animals. It was created by Ingrid Newkirk and Alex Pacheco.

Legislation

The Improved Standards for Laboratory Animals Act was put in place to provide regulations for lab animals. It makes the lab scientists walk their animals, provide large living spaces, and it says that their pain needs to be extremely minimal.

Legislation

The Pet Act provides a holding period for cats and dogs to determine if an animal is fir for adoption, and it provides a background of each animal. It also makes it so animals need to be vaccinated before they are sold.

ELF

The Earth Liberation Front is created as a partnership to the ALF.

This United States Senator criticized PETA saying that they side with domestic terrorist because PETA gave grants to ALF and ELF

Panettiere

Hayden Panettiere went to Japan and confronted Japanese fishermen that were killing dolphins. Due to her efforts she was awarded the Compassion in Action award from PETA.

DeGeneres

Ellen DeGeneres was awarded the Wyler Award by the Humane Society, and she was also named Women of the Year by PETA.

Today

Today, many of the previously mentioned groups and organizations still remain. Many of the more recent groups that have formed over the past 10 years have been more wild life related.

Furture

In 20 years we think that even more organizations will develop in order to further protect animals. There might we an increase in vegetarians, and there will hopefully be a decrease in animal cruelty.
