Friday Morning Serial

Every Friday morning from 8-9am, at the GCCDS office, we host “Friday Morning Serial”.

;xNLx;This free weekly public event brings a different speaker and topic to the attendees through a 10-15 minute presentation. The majority of the morning is spent as group discussion, asking questions, and brainstorming. Community members, government officials, artists, scientists, professionals, students, and designers make up some of the varied attendees. ;xNLx;FMS provides a gathering and networking opportunity in which people whom may have never met or talked can come together over cereal, coffee, and tea for informed discussion one hour each week. Our topics and speakers are from diverse backgrounds and provide specialized insight. Topics vary from ecological restoration to Urban planning and policy, Mississippi artisanal foods to the local film industry. This event is a catalyst for change and growth, connecting people along the Gulf Coast and beyond.

Harrison, Jackson, and Hancock County on the Mississippi coast are perfect areas for goat land management due to our proximity to so many fragile waterways and abundance of neglected or vacant lots.

Stephanie Plancich "The MS Gulf Coast Metropolitan Transportation Plan: Our Roadmap to Connectivity"

In August 2014 the Gulf Regional Planning Commission began the process of writing the 2040 Mississippi Gulf Coast Metropolitan Transportation Plan. The 2040 Plan is wide reaching and addresses all forms of transportation issues along the MS Gulf Coast including; liveability and development, road safety, goods movement, accessible transportation, and bicycling/walking. GRPC wants to make sure that as many community voices as possible are heard and that these voices are included in the plan. There are three ways for the average citizen to get involved; Attend a scheduled open house, become a member of an advisory committee, and participate on mstransportationplan.mindmixer.com . GRPC knows the issues and is asking for communities and citizens to tell them how to prioritize these issues. . A key component to getting the 2040 plan right is community involvement through participation in plan development and also making your voice heard by going to local Council meetings. GRPC needs the support of local governments and community members to make the Gulf Coast an accessible, safe, and fun place to be.

Kenney Washington "Who are the Homeless and Near Homeless of Biloxi?"

Back Bay Mission in Biloxi MS is the safety net for the homeless and near homeless populations in our city and along the coast. Services such as the Permanent Supported Housing Program is designed to support people in the transition from the streets to a home, or providing an address and phone number for homeless people applying to jobs. The biggest service they provide is Opportunity. "Everyone deserves the opportunity to have a roof over their head." There are no overnight shelters in this area and the Back Bay Mission works to provide tents and place people in affordable housing. There is a misconception about shelters for the homeless. Chronically homeless population do not want to go to shelters. Overnight shelters are utilized by Situational homeless such as single mothers that have been evicted on a Friday afternoon, or the working homeless. Building overnight shelters is not going to attract the "wrong" type of people to our community, it's only going to support the people who need it who are already part of our community. "The homeless can and are any of us in this room" To find out how to get involved please contact Back Bay Mission to get the real story of homelessness so you or your organization can really help!!
