From Club To Festival Part II

I have researched and collected posters/Flyers/Lanyards/Wristbands for case study, Global Gathering. I have collected both primary and secondary source research from the third year up to present year. I have spoken about each poster piece of design work for the event and compared them throughout the years. Global Gathering is an annual dance festival held in the UK and in previous years has enlarged and spread across Europe. It provides music from the leading electronic music artists across the globe. The festival has been running since 2001, following success from the Code Club, the home of Godskitchen. The organizers of Godskitchen recognized that there was room to expand dance music from clubs to outdoor music festival venues. Unfortunately I was unable to collect any concept or artwork from the opening 2 years of the festival, but have managed to grasp some from every year since.

The logo

The logo is type based in a sanserif font. The logo is distinctive as it is the initials of the festival (GG) they are aligned on a diagonal, with one g upside down, it kind of looks like a chain link. The logo is then boxed off with a diagonal slant on one corner, a good thing about this is that it allows the designers for global gathering to make patterns and designs from the shape.

2003

The festival poster for 2003 is very colour co ordinated and also structured with a primary and secondary logo. The Godskitchen logo appears above the global gathering logo. The global gathering typeface is Helvetica bold, where as the Godskitchen logo is a fixed width freelance type, the date of the festival is also in this type and other information is also in Helvetica bold. From the bright image used, you get the feel of a summer environment, yet no feel to what type of music the festival is, the only clue to that is knowledge of Godskitchen.

2004

Following in 2003’s footsteps, the colours and typeface settings are very similar; the imagery has changed though now to a plane going off into the sun, this indicates the festivals venue with it being held at an old airfield. Still no signs of what music it is only knowledge of Godskitchen once again.

2005-06-24 05:58:10

2005

2005 is the first year the poster screams out ‘Festival’. The Godskitchen logo has been shrunk and the global gathering logo has been enlarged, this suggests its becoming more about global gathering as an event than a Godskitchen event. The poster has the festival line up in a column layout, with strong border images of the festival from previous years. The colour guides are a bit too much, there are too many colours used opposed to using a colour guide.

2006-06-23 05:58:10

2006

Moving on from 2005, the 2006 design is completely different again. The Godskitchen logo has now been dropped meaning that global gathering is now its own event. Putting the ‘Gathering’ on an angle has modified the logo; the logo is bordered by silhouette of a crowd of dancing people. The headlining acts have their logos underneath the festival logo, with the rest of the line up underneath in a centered structure. There is a colour guidelines used being orange/brown/yellow, but I don’t think it suits the festival with it being a dance event; it doesn’t strike out in the dance music culture as a dance event.

2007-06-29 05:58:10

2007

The artwork for 2007 has really stepped up a gear from previous years, it has a good solid structure and layout in column format for the line up, the headlining acts all have their own unique logo above the line up. Different colours section off each stage of the line up. The logo has been modified, it is not in a stacked format as usual, it’s all one line, but it has glowing effect fills and is arced to make it look like it is on a banner. The colours work well as a colour guide being yellows and purples as it enables text to stand out from one another unlike 2006 where it was all pretty much the same colours. Text boxes have started to be used and more up to date imagery although does it relate to dance music?

2008-06-27 02:12:31

2008

Once again, the poster for 2008 takes complete different route than 2007. The poster is pretty basic with only basic information, which includes dates and venue. The logo has now got a graphic spray type border; there is a variety of illustrations and photographs from previous years of the festival for advertisement.

2009-06-26 02:12:31

2009

The logo from 2008 has been carried over into 2009. The imagery used in 2008 has also been used but across the bottom of the poster underneath the centered aligned text. The only similarity this poster has in comparison to previous years is that it has kept the artist logos.

2010-06-25 02:12:31

2010

In pretty much the same format as 2010, the difference being the imagery is only illustrations and no photographs. It is very basic with a colour guide of blues and white.

2011-06-24 02:12:31

2011

For the first time since the festival started, the original global gathering logo appears on the poster, and as I pointed out, the box that goes around the logo, has been used both to create a techno vibe digital pattern, and also as text boxes for the line up and for images. The typeface has now been changed also. This is a much better looking poster, which does justice in the dance music culture.

2012-06-29 02:12:31

2012

From the success of the design of 2011, 2012 has only seen slight modifications. Once again the logo has been put into effect for the patterns and text boxes across the whole of the poster. The logo is now once again in a stack layout. The big difference from 2011 is that the background base colour is yellow.

2013-06-28 02:12:31

2013

2013 again changes slightly; the logo stack and information layout remains the same, as does the text boxes. There is a new pattern design, which gives it more of a techno look, which looks a bit like patterns used in Parklife and warehouse project events. With an image used from previous year for advertisement. The colour guide is good as its bright colours to attract people in the scene of dance music.

2014-06-27 02:12:31

2014

The logo patterns and text boxes have been dropped for 2014, the layout is still in text boxes but which are hexagons shaped. The poster has the same logo and information layout as 2012/13, which is a success in the designs. The colour guide remains the same, which has also been a success. Each line up box has a different colour. With a triangle pattern in the background with an image which runs across the bottom of the poster.
