World War ll - the dictates of "Great Men"

This WWII timeline highlights and focuses on the powerful leaders who greatly impacted the war, whether it be good or bad. It focuses on the deeds of four powerful men: Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini, leaders from the Axis powers; Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill, leaders from the Allies.

Creation of Fascism

Mussolini created the founding group of Fascism, consisting of 200 members, in Milan, Italy. This new ideology would play a big part in the future war.

Hitler appointed as Chancellor

After two parliamentary elections in the year of 1932, Hitler was named Chancellor of Germany. Politicians thought that Germany needed a strong, effective leader like Hitler, and suggested him to German president, Hindenburg. This appointment opened the door to opprutunities of power that Hitler was so very eager for.

Hitler presents the "Nuremberg Laws"

Hitler presented two laws to the Reichstag which mainly limited Jews' and "non-Aryans'" rights in Germany. These laws encouraged anti-semitism and marked the starting of the Holocaust period.

World War ii Begins

Britain and France declare war against Germany.

Churchill becomes Prime Minister

Chamberlain, Former Prime Minister of Britain who infamously appeased Hitler years prior to the War resigned and Churchill was elected.

Hitler and Mussolini Unite

After Germany's successes in conquering lands in Eastern Europe, Mussolini and Hitler unite Germany and Italy. This lead to the collective formation of the Axis Powers, who's aim was to deter the U.S. from aiding the British.

Mussolini declares war against Britain & France

Mussolini, the dictator of Italy entered the war on the Axis side. Although Britain hoped they would enter on their side, like they did in WWI, Mussolini thought Germany was likely to win the war.

Roosevelt Creates the "Lend-Lease" Agreement

With Congress's approval, Roosevelt provided an agreement which aided and supplied munition to the Allies as well as other countries fighting against Nazi Germany with Britain.

Roosevelt declares war against Japan and Germany

Shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor, with much national support from the U.S. people, Roosevelt announces that they are now involved in the war. He famously stated, "it is a date that will live in infamy."

Roosevelt signs Executive Order 9066

Roosevelt signed an order involving the internment of Japanese, German and Italian citizens in America. This allowed the relocation of all people having dual citizenship or no citizenship at all. He passed this law out of fear of fear of terrorism and sabotage.

Hitler Declares war against the U.S.

Shortly after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, Hitler delcares war against America. Germany was now fighting a war against the world's three super-powers; Britain, the U.S. and the Soviet Union.

Mussolini's Dismissal and Arrest

As the Axis powers were declining, several members of Italy's Fascit party were close to revolting against Mussolini. At a meeting with King Victor Emmanuel III, he was informed that he was being replaced and was then sent to a completely isolated resort in the mountains.

Roosevelt's Fourth Election

Roosevelt re-elected and re-innagurated for a fourth term, making him the longest president in the U.S. His victory symbolized the end of the country's Isolationism and their future involvement in the international community and the war.

Roosevelt's Death

Roosevelt died a peaceful death due to old age and several health conditions. He died shortly before the war ended, never being able to see the Allies' victory.

Mussolini's Death

Mussolini, and his mistress, Clara Petacci, were executed in Milan, Italy. After being in hiding for years, he was captured and shot at. His dead body, along with other Fascist followers, was hung in a piazza where it was kicked and spit at as well as stoned by civilians.

Hitler's Death

Hitler's dead body was found in the Führerbunker, along with his newly-bewedded wife's, Eva Braun. The two committed suicide together; he shot himself with his pistol, and she drugged herself. Hitler realized that Germany had lost the war, and knew that the Red Army would be after him.
