Treaty of Paris 1763

The Treaty of Paris was signed on February 10, 1763, by the Kingdom of Great Britain, France and Spain with Portugal in agreement. Together with the Treaty of Hubertusburg, it ended the French and Indian War and the Seven Years' War. The treaties marked the beginning of an extensive period of British dominance outside of Europe. As a result the British Crown started to tax the colonies to pay for the war.

Parliament Taxes the Colonies

After the French and Indian War, Britain placed numerous acts on the Colonies, trying to get money to pay for the war. The Navigation Acts in 1651, Molasses Act in 1733, and the Currency Act in 1751 all predated the French and Indian War. These acts angered the Colonists, but not as much as the Sugar Act, (1764) the Stamp Act, (1765) the Quartering Act, (1765) the Declaratory Act, (1766) the Townshend Acts, (1767) the Tea Act, (1773) and the Coercive Acts. (1774) These later Acts triggered the American Revolutionary War.

Boston Massacre

The Boston Massacre was one of the events that helped start the American Revolutionary War. After the French and Indian War, the British were in need of money, so they placed heavy taxes on the Colonies. After violent protests from the Colonists, British troops were sent to Boston to keep order. This only made things worse. On March 5, 1770, a young wigmaker’s apprentice, Edward Gerrish, started to insult one of the British Lieutenants. He later came back with his companions and started throwing snowballs at the soldiers. A large crowd soon gathered, and continued to harass the soldiers. The British then fired, hitting eleven men, five of whom died. The crowd quickly dispersed, but the incident was not forgotten.

Battle of Lexington and Concord

Why were the battles of Lexington and Concord a key event in the America Revolution? The battles were a key event because they marked the beginning of the American Revolution. Earlier, the colonists had been training their own militia. Now, when the British intended to take the colonists’ weapons and ammunition, the colonists openly fought back against the largest empire in the world. The British had planned to capture and kill Sam Adams and John Hancock, as well as confiscate the colonists’ supply of ammunition.

Why was the battle of Bunker Hill a key event of the American Revolution? This battle was a key event since it showed both the British and the Colonists that the untrained American militia could stand up against the British.

That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed... Why was the writing of the Declaration of Independence a key event in the American Revolution? This was a key event because the colonies were officially and publicly declaring their independence from Britain. The Declaration contained numerous grievances against King George, justifying the colonies’ separation.

Battle of Long Island

Why was the battle of Long Island a key event in the America Revolution? The battle of Long Island (also known as the Battle of Brooklyn) was fought on August 27, 1776. It was a defeat for the Continental Army under General George Washington and the beginning of a successful campaign that gave the British control of the strategically important city of New York. Long Island was the first major battle to take place after the United States declared independence on July 4, 1776. In terms of troop size, it was the largest battle of the entire war. The Americans were retreating from the British, who planned to defeat them the next morning. However, a fog came up and hid the Colonists from the view of the British.

Battle of Trenton

Why was the battle of Trenton a key event in the American Revolution? This battle was a key event because it was the Colonists' first major victory in a long time. For a while, the Colonists had been faring badly. The British had captured Fort Washington and 3,000 American soldiers. 2,000 militiamen deserted in one day. New York City had been captured. Washington would soon lose much of his army, since the soldiers enlistments would soon be up. At Trenton, Washington and his 3,000 troops had to fight the British and Germain Hessians' 10,000 troops. Amazingly, the Washington was victorious.

Battle of Brandywine

Why was the Battle of Brandywine a Key Event in the American Revolution? This battle was a key event because after the battle the British were eventually able to capture Philadelphia which was the American Capital at that time. Washington’s army had lined up behind Brandywine Creek and the British were on the other side. While there was a minor battle going on at Chadds Ford directed by British General Howe, British General Charles Cornwallis and his men marched up the back roads to cross farther upstream to come behind the Americans. Too late, Washington realized what the British were doing. After some desperate fighting, the Americans retreated. The battle was also important because a British sharp shooter had his sights on Washington. He didn't think it was right to shoot an unoffending officer in the back, so Washington got away safely. This was yet another example of God's Providence in the American Revolution.

Battle of Saratoga

Why was the Battle of Saratoga a Key Event in the American Revolution? This battle was a key part of winning the American Revolutionary War, mostly because the Americans proved to the French that they had a chance in the war. The French had been unwilling to help the Americans because of their losses. British General John Burgoyne ended up surrendering his army to the American General Horatio Gates on October 17, 1777 after being surrounded. This battle was also called The Battle of Freeman’s Farm.

Valley Forge

Why was Valley Forge a Key Event in the American Revolution? Well, even though about 2,000 men died there, the Americans persevered and became a better army. The Americans stayed at Valley Forge during the winter of 1777-1778. Baron von Steuben, a Prussian drill sergeant, trained the American soldiers to be tougher and more disciplined. The winter was harsh, and many of the soldiers were freezing. They didn’t have enough food, clothing, or shelter. In the spring, Washington moved his army out and into Philadelphia, which the British had abandoned.

Capture of Fort Vincennes

Why was this a key event in the American Revolution Although it's somewhat obscure, this event has significance nonetheless. Lt. Colonel George Rogers Clark decided to capture Fort Vincennes in order to secure a safe route by which the colonists could receive war supplies. Clark took about 200 men with him and succeeded in doing this. However, the British sent troops and recaptured Vincennes. Clark then gathered about 500 men with him and set out to take Vincennes back from the British. The journey was difficult because the rains had swollen the rivers. Despite this, Clark persevered, devised a clever military strategy, and launched an attack on the fort. At last the British were forced to surrender. The Colonists were victorious and succeeded securing the Vincennes for themselves, once and for all.

Battle of Kings Mountain

Why was the Battle of Kings Mountain a key event in the American Revolution? Kings Mountain is a major battle because the Patriots were coming off of a series of defeats by the British. By beating the British at Kings Mountain, they defeated one of the three major units of the British army in the South. It was the largest battle of the war where there were mainly Americans on both sides. The soldiers on the British side were Tories. Among the American soldiers were some militia, but mostly is was a group of men called the "Over-the-Mountain men." These men were farmers with no training or fighting experience.

Battle of Cowpens

Why was the battle of Cowpens a key event in the American Revolution? The Americans had lost major battles in the South, such as Charleston, Camden and Waxhaws. Many of the people in the South were starting to support the British. The Patriots were starting to lose hope. Then, just in the nick of time, the Americans won a great victory over the infamous British general, Banastre Tarleton. Tarleton was known for killing the prisoners he took at the battle of Waxhaws. This battle helped lift the morale of the patriots, who realized they still had a chance to win the war. The British lost a huge part of their army at Cowpens, since Tarleton lost eighty-six percent of his troops. The Patriots, under General Daniel Morgan, also took 712 prisoners.

Battle of Guilford Courthouse

The Battle of Guilford Court House took place in modern-day Greensboro County, near the city of Greensboro, North Carolina. Why was the battle of Guilford Court House a key event in the American Revolution? In this battle, the Patriots under General Nathanael Green, fought the British, under General Charles Cornwallis. It was a short battle, lasting a mere ninety minutes. The battle is considered a British victory, since the Patriots stopped fighting and left the field. However, the British had suffered so many casualties that they retreated after the battle to Yorktown. This situation was later advantageous to the Patriots.

Battle of Yorktown

Why was the battle of Yorktown a key event in the American Revolution? It was a key event because it was the last major military action in the war. The British army surrendered to General George Washington and Lieutenant General Comte de Rochambeau at Yorktown. And about two years later, America was recognized as free, separate nation from Britain.

Treaty of Paris 1783

Why was the Treaty of Paris in 1783 a key event in American Revolution? Well, it was the treaty between Britain and America that ended the war. Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and John Jay were the ones who signed it. America was recognized by Britain as a new nation, and Britain became its ally.
