Stories of Change Announcement

Sundance and Skoll issue a press release to announce 3-year, $3 million Stories of Change partnership. Activities include: • Creating a year-round network connecting social entrepreneurs and filmmakers centered on annual convenings at major events such as the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah and the Skoll World Forum in Oxford, England. • Providing $1.2 million in film project grants to enable the seeding, development and creation of new films; expand the audience of documentary films concerned with social entrepreneurship. • Creating an online resource for social entrepreneurs and filmmakers to facilitate individual and community-level networking, collaboration and exchange of information, knowledge and expertise. • Presenting case studies to frame and shape how those working in social entrepreneurship and film/media approach creative concept development.

6 Documentary filmmakers attend. The Sundance Institute Documentary Film Program (DFP) worked with 12 social entrepreneurs during the Skoll World Forum through a workshop, meetings and panels. Cara Mertes, Director, DFP, announces a second round of Stories of Change production grants. Stories of Change film director Gayle Ferraro, whose documentary on Muhammad Yunus and Grameen America will be the first film completed in the series, joins Mertes on a panel to talk about the project.

"Open Heart" Screenings

Open Heart screens in NYC, L.A. and San Francisco to qualify for Academy Award in the Documentary Short Subject category. The screenings produce immediate impact: • Medical equipment manufacturer Philips donates a $100,000 portable echocardio machine sent to Rwanda in January 2013. • A heart valve manufacturer explores delivering free valves, or valves at a greatly reduced price to Rwanda, significantly increasing the number of emergency heart surgeries per year. • Head of the Cardiology department at VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam (who attended an IDFA screening) coordinates with Rwandan cardiologist Dr. Emanuel to raise funds for treatment of heart disease in Rwanda.

"The Revolutionary Optimists" Bring Water to Community in Kolkata

After screening the film in India, Salim and Shika, the young activists featured in the film, and Prayasam, the non-profit organization led by Social Entrepreneur Amlan Ganguly, succeed in bringing a clean water project to their community. Wendy Levy, Senior Consultant for the Sundance Institute Documentary Film Program, delivers 21 Google Smart Phones to the children/community workers of Prayasam. These young activists will use the phones to collect data for a scalable multi-platform public health initiative called Map Your World, an innovative project that will help track and eliminate communicable diseases among slum-dwellers in India, and support the residents’ campaign for better public health and social services.

"The Revolutionary Optimists" Launches a US Screening & Impact Tour

"The Revolutionary Optimists" opens in theaters in select cities and screens at UNICEF with Q&A with Shikha and Salim, the children in the film, Amlan Ganguly, and filmmakers. The UN Foundation presents the film at the “Shot@Life” Advocates Summit in Washington, DC, and the uses the film to anchor global vaccination campaigns implemented at the grassroots level. Ashoka, the Washington, DC-based social entrepreneur-support organization is promotes the film by hosting a screening and a post-screening Q&A with the filmmakers. Tribeca Film Institute Education Program presents the film to NYC schoolchildren in special screenings with the Prayasam team and the filmmakers. Melinda Gates interviews Salim and Shika for TEDx. Salim, Shika and Amlan Ganguly attend a screening at the Global Vaccine Summit Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Stories of Change Convening at the Skoll World Forum

he Stories of Change Convening at the 2015 Skoll World Forum on Social Entrepreneurship was an intensive series of workshops, meetings, presentations and discussions about storytelling and its relationship to the work of social entrepreneurs – innovative change-makers who are confronting the world’s most pressing problems. Sundance filmmakers and digital platform storytellers included: Nicole Newnham, Cori Shepherd Stern, Dawn Porter, and Anjali Nayar, along with Institute staffers Anne Lai (Feature Film Program), Kamal Sinclair (New Frontier), and Documentary Film Program Senior Institute Consultant Wendy Levy. The Skoll Awarded Social Entrepreneurs came from: Apopo, International Bridges do Justice, and WITNESS.
