History OF Early Education

The follow is a time table of the impacts of the modern education system in America. It will show important people and events that occurred in our country as well as the influences of other countries.

Martin Luther

Martin Luther was a pioneer for the modern educational system. Luther focused his emphasis on the need for critical thinking in the educational field. Luther created a theses called Ninety-Five which was all about a different approach to education. This was a comparison to what the church viewed how education should look.

Philipp Melanchton

Philipp Melanchton was born in Germany. He was passionate about showing the world the importance of grammar schools and universities. Melanchton was a scholar with a masters from Tubingen University at the age of 17.

John Calvin

John Calvin was considered to be one of the most influential theologians in American history. He was a supporter of a two track educational system that. The first was common schools teaching the three R’s. The second track of his system were secondary schools that would teach humanist curriculum. This would guide and prepare them to be leaders in the church and state as well.

Founding of Harvard

The first place of higher learning every to be created in America was Harvard University in 1636. Up until that point if an American wanted to further their education they would have to go to the other side of the globe.

Thomas Jefferson was one of our founding fathers for this great country. He was the third President of the United States. He was an advocate for education in our country. He was also desired to have a public school system in America.

Benjamin Rush

Benjamin Rush desired to have a public educational system in our country. He had what was considered a revolutionary idea to make that happened, however it was not accepted at that time in the history of our educational system. He also was a huge advocate for the education of women.

Noah Webster

It was said the Webster actually had the most influence on education in the republic. He was an advocate for the American education system. It was Webster that wrote new readers, speller’s and grammar books to replace the English texts that were currently in use at the time.

Emma Hart Willard

Emma Willard was one of the biggest female pioneers in the modern educational system. In 1814 Emma and John Willard opened a female Seminary school. This was the first of its kind in early America. There school was the first to teach women a full curriculum.

Anne Sullivan

Anne Sullivan was considered by some a miracle worker. She was a brilliant young teacher whom had the ability to teach outside the normal realm. She is most recognized for teaching the famous Helen Keller.

In 1892 the National Education Association (NEA) established what was called the Committee of Ten. Their task was to create a standardization for the public school systems.

Commission on the Reorganization of Secondary Education

The Commission on the Reorganization of Secondary Education (CRSE) had the purpose to look at and reevaluate the current curriculum. There was a need to change it to bring it up to the currents needs of society.

The eight year study

The eight year study was a collaboration by the Progressive Education Association. It was ran under the control of Ralph Tyler. The study took 30 high schools and experimented with their curricula. The purpose of this study was to see what could be done to improve the schools and the educational standards.

The Geat Depression on Education

The Great Depression had a huge toll on the education system. It was the end of the depression that the government saw a need to step in and help our educational system. There was more tax dollars granted to recover the system and get more teachers into the schools.

The WPA was part of the New Deal Package set to improve and regain the country’s economy. It was set up to provide the public school systems with more federal funding. The economy was bouncing pack and there was a need for educated people to fill the workforce of America.

Brown v. Board of Education

The case of Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka was a huge breaking point for desegregation in our country. This ruling by the courts stated that all students had an equal and fair right to an education. This ruling is what helped the civil rights movement be allowing schools to no longer be same race places of education.

Jaime Escalante

Jaime Escalante was a man that was not afraid to push kids outside their comfort zone. He received national attention for his work with his students. He took students that were not expected to even graduate and taught them advanced mathematics.

The Paideia Proposal

The Paideia Proposal was an Educational manifesto created by Mortimer Adler and Allan Bloom in 1982. It was a plan for the reform of the educational system for grades k-12. It was their desire for an equal education for all children.

A Nation at Risk was a call for Imperative for Educational Reform. It used a strong language to make a point of the rising tide of mediocrity in education. It was a report to look at an addressee the path of the American education system.

The Goals 2000

The Goals 2000 was a presidential plan for the change of the educational system. It was to have certain criteria to be meet and goals reached by the year 2000 and beyond.

No Child Left Behind

In 2001 President George Bush created the No Child Left Behind or the (NCLB) act. It called for a reform of the education system. The act allowed the government to have more presence in the system. It would also give schools more federal funding and a national testing system.
