How Sierra Leone Became the Ebola Epicentre
As of the 11th August, nearly 2,000 people in West Africa have been infected with Ebola. Over half of these cases have resulted in death. Our citizen reporters based around Sierra Leone, the worst-hit country, have been sharing news via SMS and WhatsApp, going beyond the statistics to find out how their communities have reacted and adapted to the outbreak. Their reports have been picked up by Channel 4 News, BBC World Service and the Huffington Post. This timeline tracks how events have unfolded from the perspective of affected communities.
The hemorrhagic virus was first reported in Sierra Leone in May, and since then has had an increasingly tight grip on the country.;xNLx;;xNLx;Initially, some were sceptical of the disease's existence, due in part to the fragile relations between authority and citizens. Though the civil war ended in 2002, distrust of the government is still prevalent.;xNLx;;xNLx;Through the combined efforts of community leaders, NGOs and government officials, awareness of Ebola has spread faster than the disease itself. Despite this, Sierra Leone now has the most cases of Ebola in the region. With the virus still an ever-present threat, and due to restrictions placed on movement and trade, citizens are faced with fresh challenges such as isolation and hunger. ;xNLx;;xNLx;For more updates, follow us on [Twitter](http://www.twitter.com/onourradar) and visit our [website](http://www.onourradar.org). ;xNLx;;xNLx;Background image courtesy of EC/ECHO/Cyprien Fabre, reproduced under Creative Commons license.
