Why is it important:Shows how the alliance system contributed to the war because when Germany invaded Belgium during world war I they violated the treaty and brought Great Britain into the war.

Re-insurance Treaty

What was it: A secret agreement between the USSR and Germany that guaranteed should either of them go to war then the other would remain neutral. Why was it important: This was important because it ensured that Germany and Russia would not fight each other in the instances when one of their allies went to war with the each other then they would stay neutral. This was more important to Germany though because it meant that if they attacked one of Russia's allies then they wouldn't have to fight Russia at the same time and they could take their fights one at a time.

Franco-Russo Military Alliance

What was it: The agreement between France and Russia was made after the Reinsurance Treaty expired in 1880. It stipulated that if one of the members of the Triple Alliance attacked France or Russia the other would come to their aid. Why was it important: This is important because it put France on the side of Russia, which meant that Japan couldn't attack Russia without having insurance that France wouldn't attack them too. This somewhat resulted in the Anglo-Japanese Agreement.

What was it: War between Japan and China primarily over control of Korea. Why was it important: Japan won, displaying their superiority over China as an East Asian nation, however, when the treaty to finalize the result of the war was drawn up, three of the Big European powers, Russia, Germany, and France, wouldn't allow Japan to have Port Arthur. This created hostility between Japan and Russia especially.

First Moroccan Crisis

What is it: Germany goes to Morocco to free its citizens from France and France almost gives Morocco over to Germany, however Great Britain stepped in and defended France against Germany and forced Germany to leave. Why is it important: This demonstrated how imperialism was a cause of WWI because it sparked a rage in Germany as well as a desire for revenge by Germany because of how they were humiliated and had desired to humiliate other countries in retaliation.

What is it: Japan agreeing to limit the immigration of workers to the United States. The United States agreeing to stop discrimination of Japanese immigrants in the United States. Why is it important: This Agreement was Theodore Roosevelt's effort to ease the tension between the United States and Japan. This shows how there was already growing tension between the United States and Japan. It was also terminated by the Immigration Act of 1924

What is it: Agreement between the US and Japan that required acknowledgement from Japan that Hawaii and the Philippines are US territories and that the Japanese wouldn't encourage immigrants to go to the US, no more than 100 Japanese immigrants would go to the US per year. How is it important: demonstrates american racism towards Japan, directly contributes to tensions in World War II.

Japan Annexes Korea

What is it: The Japan–Korea Treaty of 1910, also known as the Japan–Korea Annexation Treaty, was made by representatives of the Empire of Japan and the Korean Empire on August 22, 1910. In this treaty, Japan formally annexed Korea following the Japan–Korea Treaty of 1905 by which Korea became the protectorate of Japan and Japan–Korea Treaty of 1907 by which Korea was deprived of the administration of internal affairs. The treaty was proclaimed to the public (and became effective) on August 29, 1910, officially starting the period of Japanese rule in Korea. The treaty had eight articles, the first being: "His Majesty the Emperor of Korea makes the complete and permanent cession to His Majesty the Emperor of Japan of all rights of sovereignty over the whole of Korea". Balkan Crisis

What is it: This crisis started when Austria-Hungary annexed Bosnia. Serbia was annoyed by this because they wanted Bosnia to become part of  a 'Greater Serbia' as there were a lot of Slavic people living in Bosnia. Russia backed up Serbia as it saw itself as the protector of the Slavic people that Serbia sought to protect. Serbia and Russia had to back down because Germany backed up Austria-Hungary. Why is it important: This is important because it causes tention between two world powers Germany and Russia. This helps demonstrate the Allience system in The Development of WWI.

What is it: "According to the terms of the ultimatum delivered on July 23, the Serbian government would have to accept an Austro-Hungarian inquiry into the assassination, notwithstanding its claim that it was already conducting its own internal investigation. Serbia was also to suppress all anti-Austrian propaganda and to take steps to root out and eliminate terrorist organizations within its borders—one such organization, the Black Hand, was believed to have aided and abetted the archduke's killer, Gavrilo Princip, and his cohorts, providing weapons and safe passage from Belgrade to Sarajevo. What is it: It was telegrams between Tsar and Kaiser. Why is it important: It shows that they both disagree with the actions that are going to take place. Tsar does not want Germanys former allie, Austria-Hungary to attack Sebia and wants Kaiser to stop it. Which Kaiser believes is not necessary. This event shows that they are not on the same page, and enemies.

Second Battle of Ypres

What is it: The only major attack launched by Germany on the Western Front eventually concluded in failure for the Germans. Their failure lead to the destruction of Ypres through constant bombardment. Why is it important: Ypres was the testing of biological warfare as well as the first time biological warfare had been used. Even though the actual use of gas in warefore was in fact illegal, the Germans use of the gas depsite it being frozen due to the cold was startling effective in the battle.

Sinking of the Sussex

What is it: torpedoing of a French cross-channel passenger steamer, the Sussex, by a German submarine, leaving 80 casualties, including two Americans wounded. The attack prompted a U.S. threat to sever diplomatic relations. Why is it important: The German government responded with the so-called Sussex pledge (May 4, 1916), agreeing to give adequate warning before sinking merchant and passenger ships and to provide for the safety of passengers and crew. The pledge was upheld until February 1917, when unrestricted submarine warfare was resumed.

Sussex Pledge

What is it: Promise made to U.S. from Germany during World War I prior to the U.S. entrance into the war after the sinking of the Sussex. Why is it important: Germany agreed to abide by the rules of submarine warfare in this pledge after attacking and sinking a French submarine without warning. This was an attempt on Germany's part to appease the U.S., however, less than one year later Germany would believe she could win the war with unrestricted submarine warfare and therefore the pledge was rescinded. This caused the U.S. to enter WWI.

Why is it important: "The proposal was intercepted and decoded by British intelligence. Revelation of the contents outraged American public opinion and helped generate support for the United States declaration of war on Germany in April of that year."

Bolshevik Revolution

What is it: The Bolsheviks overthrew the provisional goverment and steped into office. Lenin, the leader of the Bolsheviks, announced his attempt to construct the socialist order in Russia. This new government made up of Soviets, and led by the Bolsheviks, which are present day communists. Why is it important: "It laid the foundations of a new type of society in which the church ceased to be an important political factor. Private property, ownership of land and wealth of every other kind were abolished. The means of production and most of those of distribution were taken over by the state. It set up new standards of ways of living and thinking."

What is it: This was a peace treaty between Russia's government and the Central Powers which ended Russia's participation in World War One as well as placing harsh restrictions on Russia. Treaty of Versailles

What is it: Treaty that officially ended World War I, the requirements of the treaty were that Germany had to accept war guilt, pay damages caused (6.6 billion pounds,) army reduced to 100,000 men, conscription was forbidden, get rid of armored vehicles, demilitarize the Rhineland, return Alsace-Lorraine to France, and give up saar to France for 15 years. Why is it important: Ended the war, angered Germans because they thought it was too harsh, was never properly enforced, Germany wasn't made to feel like a loser

Why is it important: Austria violated this treaty during world war II when they realigned themselves with Germany and Hungary.

Treaty of Sevres

What is it: Treaty signed in 1920 between the Allied Powers and the Ottoman Empire. The purpose of the treaty was to disband the Ottoman Empire and have it divided into several autonomous nations as well as alloting certain parcels of land to other world powers. Why is it important: This was important mostly to the other larger world powers, most notably the the ones that suported an imperialistic style of economy. The treaty allowed for new markets to open up and even though they may not have been large, the whole situaton was beneficial to imperialism in general.

Immigration act 1924

What is it: The Immigration Act of 1924 (Johnson-Reed Act) severely limited the number of immigrants that could into the United States; this act included barring immigration from all Asian countries. The act was revised in 1952. Why is it important: This act went against what was agreed upon in the Gentlemen's Agreement and, with the Japanese feeling very offended in that the act was specifically aimed at their citizens, this act caused rising tensions between the Japanese and American governments.

League of Nations condemns attack on Mukden

What is it: The condemning of the Japanese over the attack of Mukden was the LON’s response to Japan invading China. Why is it important: This was supposed to be the LON keeping the peace by asking Japan, who had used military force, to leave China, who was pretty much defenseless. This plan backfired when Japan took further control of the area. The LON in turn commissioned an inquiry of the situation under Lytton, which was published a year later and was in favor of the Chinese. This lead to Japan leaving the LON in 1933.

Rome-Berlin Axis

What is it: Italy ended their alliance with Britian and France following their annexation of Abyssinia, so Hitler thought it a good idea to draw a fascist Italy into an alliance with Nazi Germany. After assisting Italy in the Spanish civil war, which included the infamous bombing of Guernica, Hitler invited Mussolini to Berlin where they signed an alliance. It contained a protocol committing Germany and Italy to follow a common foreign policy. Why is it important: First alliance Germany made pre WWII. Led to the term "Axis Powers" which would later include Japan.
