Cromwell dismisses the Rump Parliament after they attempted to stay in session despite an agreement to resolve. Instead, a new parliament is elected and Cromwell is name Lord Protector of the British Republic.

Oliver passes away, leaving the reins of leadership to his son, Richard. Richard struggles to gain the trust of senior military officers who wanted a soldier to be promoted at commander-in-chief, rather than a new Protector.
After winning his officers over by clearing arrears of pay, he also cultivated a friendship with General Monck of Scotland and appointed his brother lord lieutenant of Ireland.

Concerned Richard is going to cut funding to the Military, they express their grievances in the form of a petition.
The military, sick of the slights against it's prestige, gathers troops and deposes Richard Cromwell. The parliament is dissolved until May that year.
Richard leaves for a voluntary 20 year exile, from which he writes numerous letters to England.
After living the remaining 30 years of his life out on a private estate, Richard passes away. By this point in time, he is a faded memory in England.
