Visit from Douglas Mawson

Douglas Mawson, Australian geologist and explorer, went to Maquarie Island on the Australian Antarctic expedition.

Douglas Mawson Returns

Douglas Mawson went back to Macquarie Island and commented on the rabbits.As there were so many. He cancelled killing penguins and seals and started killing rabbits.

The Myxoma virus was released to kill all of the rabbits.

Last Weka caught. Eradication program for cats continues on the island.

Tourists

More and more tourists are arriving but, they have to have their pockets vacuumed of scraps and food before coming ashore.They are taken on tours of the station, and if it is good weather they are taken to see the wildlife on Sandy Bay.

Rabbit Numbers

The enormous numbers of rabbits have added to the instability as they destroy the vegetation. They are destroying habitats for the nesting birds and also destroying the beautiful landscape of the heritage island .

Baiting

They have succeeded with the drop of the baits to kill rabbits, mice and rats but still need to finish the last bit of baiting programme.
