Daniel Drake Carter Papers

Housed at the University of Kentucky Special Collections Library, the Daniel Drake Carter letters provide an in-depth look at the scarlet fever epidemic of 1879 in Kentucky.

Daniel Drake Carter was born on October 12, 1837, and was the son of Dr. Joseph Coleman Carter. He began the study of medicine at Long Island College Hospital in New York City, and completed his studies at the University of Louisville, after which he enlisted in the Confederate Army, where he served as a surgeon. After his service, he entered into medical practice with his father until his failing health forced him to give up the practice of medicine altogether.;xNLx;;xNLx;These letters are responses to Dr. Carter's 1879 inquiries about scarlet fever cases. Among the information included in the letters is the number of cases treated; vital statistics such as names, ages, gender, race, patients' counties of residence; description of symptoms, including date of outbreak and length of illness; treatments prescribed; effects of treatment; and fatalities resulting from the illness. The letters span from April 10, 1879 to May 8, 1879.;xNLx;;xNLx;(1890 U.S. Census Disease Map, accessed via the Kentucky Digital Library, 2013);xNLx;
