The Green Bay Packers

The Green Bay Packers are one of the NFL's oldest franchises with one of the most unique ownership models in professional sports. Its fans are famously dedicated and over 100,000 Packer backers are on the long waiting list for season tickets. The love that community members have for the Packers is evident through the way Wisconsin, particularly the Green Bay area, have made the Packers a priority over the last century.

Formation of the Green Bay Packers-

Curly Lambeau called a meeting of local athletes in the editorial room of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. Lambeau, a shipping clerk at the Indian Packing Company, thus guided the Green Bay Packers into existence.

First tracked attendance

The City of Green Bay built a small set of bleachers near Green Bay East High School in Hagemeister Park, where the team played. The stands held about 200 people at capacity, the first group of people who would pay admission to attend Packer games.

First Financial Crisis

Caused Lambeau to have to buy his own franchise back from the company for $250, along with the help of investors and financial backers.

Big Crowds

Packer games hosted between 4,000 to 5,000 people for big rivalry matches at Bellevue Park.

City Stadium

City Stadium was erected at the former lot near East High School where the Packers played in their first year. The season opener brought a crowd of 5,389 people.

Milwaukee Games

Packer games began to be played in Milwaukee in order to build a new fan base in the city and expand the team’s influence throughout the state of Wisconsin. These games supplemented those played in Green Bay and were played at Borchert Field, State Fair Park, Marquette Stadium and County Stadium, also home to the Milwaukee Braves and Brewers.

Increasing Seating

Between ’25 and ’34, seating gradually increased to 15,000 people and later, 25,000 people when the spots near the end zone were filled with seats. During this time, more financial troubles arose when a fan fell from the stands and sued the Packers for $5,000. However, Green Bay businessmen more than made up the lawsuit when they raised $15,000 to reorganize the team.

Don Hutson led the Packers to three league championships.

Continuing the Legacy

After Hutson retired, the Packers struggled again and needed new funding. With an old-timers game and scrimmage on Thanksgiving Day, the team raised $50,000 from community donations to continue the legacy.

Curly Lambeau resigns and another stock offering is held, which ends up raising $125,000 for the team’s reorganization efforts.

New Stadium

The old City Stadium was soon outdated compared to the new professional franchise stadiums that were becoming commonplace in bigger cities. A new City Stadium was built on Green Bay’s west side and opened in 1957.

Legendary coach Vince Lombardi coached his first season with the Packers.

The Waiting Game Begins

The first year season tickets were sold out and they have been sold out every year since then. This was the year the infamous season ticket waiting list began.

Lombardi coaches the Packers to their first world championship since Don Hutson’s days. They returned to win the championship in 1962, 1965, 1966 and 1967 as well.

Lombardi leaves the Packers to coach and manage the Washington Redskins. This begins a period of decline and unpredictable coaches.

Mike Holmgren coaches the Packers to a winning season in his first one with the team.

Goodbye, Milwaukee

The last Packers game that was played in Milwaukee at County Stadium. To honor the city of Milwaukee and the fans there, season tickets are split into two packages, one for Green Bay season ticket holders and one for Milwaukee season ticket holders. The Milwaukee ticket holders, or the “Gold Package” ticket holders get tickets to one preseason game and two regular season games per year.
