The beginning of the genre:

Safety Last-

Safety Last was the first thriller film ever to be created. This thriller keeps the audience on their toes as a store worker prepares a public stunt where a friend decides to climb a tall building, leaving him with no other option other than to climb up after him. Directed by Fred C. Newmeyer, Sam Taylor, this film fits into Met'z 'experimental' stage as this was the first film in the genre therefore there was no already existing evidence that the film would be popular. However, from that day onwards every single thriller film created had to contain conventions featured in this film.

The Lodger-

The Lodger is one of the most famous thrillers ever made. Directed by Alfred Hitchcock elements of crime, action and mystery all fit this hybrid thriller. This film would additionally fit into the 'experimental' stage of Met'z theory as it was produced in the early stages of the thriller genre. The Lodger was additionally one of the only thriller films to be based on a historical event. For example the narrative is based upon the story of 'Jack the Ripper and the crimes that he committed.

Psycho

Psycho is yet another film directed by the creator of the thriller genre- Alfred Hitchcock. I believe that Alfred Hitchcock has been one of the most inspirational directors within the horror genre as his films gained the genre a large amount of viewers. This film is about a run away assistant who steals $40,000 from a client and stays in a remote hotel run by a young man and his controlling mother. This film fits into the 'classical' category in Met'z theory as it was based upon a book.

1962-04-01 06:28:56

Cape Fear

Cape Fear is additionally regarded as a 'classical' thriller as there were many thriller films made in the 1960s that all displayed similar conventions so therefore there was no change. Cape Fear is about a lawyer's family who are stalked by a man he once helped put into prison. This conventional thriller was direction by J. Lee Thompson and written by John D. MacDonald as it was once a novel

Scream

Scream released in 1996 was directed by Wes Craven. The narrative of this film is based on a teenager's life, they find themselves living in a horror film and with a killer known as 'Ghost face'. This is another example of 'deconstruction' as it is a combination of crime, horror and mystery.

1999-11-01 12:31:30

The Sixth Sense

The Sixth Sense is a drama and mystery thriller directed by M. Night Shyamalan. This film seems to fit into the 'deconstruction' stage of Met'z theory as it is a combination of different genres. Narrative- this film is about a boy who communicates with spirits, however he doesn't know that they are dead. He then seeks the help of a disheartened child psychologist.

Scary Movie

Scary Movie was the first ever thriller film to fit into Met'z 'parody' theory. Directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans, Scary Movie is the proof of thriller/horrors such as Scream, The Sixth Sense and The Blair Witch Project. The film is about a group of teenagers who are stalked by a serial killer a year after they accidently kill a man. Both Scream and Scary Movie could be considered a horror and a thriller because they contain elements such as suspense and anxiety and themes such as death and stalking.
