Chinese invent wheelbarrow

During this time the Chinese were creating many new inventions. One of these inventions was the wheelbarrow. It helped with building sites around 100 BC.

Chinese invent paper

Paper was first created by the Chinese but was credited to an inventor about 200 years later. It was made by pounding tree bark, hemp or rags into pulp. Then they added gelatin and paper was created. Paper helped the bureaucratic Han government.

Zhang Qian Returns from West

After 13 years Zhang and his troops staggered back into China. Zhang was also in captivity for 10 years. He told stories of people who cut their hair short. He described Rome. He also told the Chinese about the Silk Road, which was a huge advancement in Chinese trade.

Zhang heng invented first seismograph

This is a very unique type of seismograph. When a tremor occurred, a mechanism caused one of the balls to fall into a toad's mouth. The side of the toad that it fell on was the direction of the seismograph. The loudness from the ball falling showed the intensity of the earthquake.

Wudi sent out an expedition led by Zhang Qian

Zhang was a general and explorer. Wudi sent him out for a 13 year exploration. This led to the expansion of the Silk Road. The advancement of the Silk Road helped China with trade.

Rule of Wudi under Han Dynasty

Under Wudi the Han Dynasty was said to have reached its peak. Wudi conquered lands and sent people on expeditions. Pax Sinica was also established under Wudi. He also had people take tests for official positions and they eventually evolved into the civil service system.

Wudi becomes the 6th han emperor

Wudi ruled from 141 B.C to 87 B.C. He was considered to be one of the most talented and dynamic rulers in Chinese history. He was and ambitious ruler and conquered many lands.

There was severe defeat in a conflict with enemies. After that political power fell to the nobles.

Qin Shihuangdi dies, dynasty soon collapeses

Qin was remembered as a tyrant. Many of his people did not agree with him. When he died the dynasty died with him.

Shihuangdi orders all books to be burned

QIn imposed new order on China. During this order he ended power to local lords and ordered all books to be burned. He saved any book with "practical" value.

End of han dynasty

After Wudi's reign ended over the people, the Han power declined until it eventually fell. Even though the Han Dynasty ended the results of invention and advancements were long lasting.

After Wudi's reign Han power began to decline and soon fell in 220. But since the Han had many new inventions and advancements it will not be forgotten.

Qin Dynasty

During the Qin Dynasty they worked on bettering the defenses of China. Because of this the Great Wall of China was started and completed. This dynasty was also under strict rule and sometimes seemed like a dictatorship.

Qin Shihuangdi founds Qin Dynasty

Shihuangdi reorganized the empire into military districts, appointing officials to govern them. He also made a system of weights and measures to replace other various systems.

China made contributions for science by recording their first sighting of Haley's Comet. They also calculated a solar year of 365 1/4 days.

Buddhism becomes popular religion in China

Buddhism came to China as the Han Dynasty was collapsing. Buddhism's emphasis on salvation in Nivana made people want to follow the religion and search for salvation. In 400 it was widely embraced.

Confucius ethics are widely followed by china

China today still follows his ethics. One of his early ethics was "Do not do to others what you do not want done to yourself" Confucius died in 479 B.C and his ethics are still followed today. They eventually became a religion of China.

Zhou political power begins to decline

The Zhou system was unstable, having to deal with chronic warfare between the various substrates and outsiders. Over the centuries, larger substates conquered smaller ones. The worst warfare occurred during the Era of the Warring States, beginning around 500 C.E. Local dukes ignored the Zhou king and fought among themselves for supremacy. The last of the Zhou states were eventually conquered by the Qin in 221 C.E., who established a more centralized government over most of the Chinese people.
