The Stamp Act

England needed to make money to pay for the French and Indian War. They enacted the Stamp Act, which made it mandatory that all printing be done a paper that was stamped by the government. This also gave the government greater control over what could and couldn't be published. The tax doubled what printing would usually cost in some cases and caused an overall rise in the price. The colonists reacted by revolting.
