Michelangelo was born on this day in the town of Caprese near Arezzo, Tuscany. (Today Caprese is known as Caprese Michelangelo.) The Buonarroti's claimed to descend from the Countess Mathilde of Canossa; this remains unproven - but Michelangelo himself believed it.
7 months after he was born; his family returned to Florence where he was then raised.
When he was just 6 years old; the prolonged illness of his mother sadly killed her.
At the age of 13 Michelangelo was apprenticed to the painter Domenico Ghirlandaio.
When in 1489 Lorenzo de' Medici; de facto ruler of Florence, asked Domenico for his 2 best pupils - Ghirlandaio sent Michelangelo and Francesca Granacci.
He died.
