The Ramones, a punk-rock band, released their first album in 1976, establishing punk-rock as a music genre.

Sex Pistols and The Clash

The punk-rock bands Sex Pistols and The Clash become popular, punk becomes serious.

Involution Ocean

Bruce Sterling's first novel Involution Ocean was released in 1977. Sterling is the unofficial spokesperson for this genre of writing. He writes a critical column for Science Fiction Eye and a popular-science column for The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction.

The word "cyberpunk" was coined by author Bruce Bethke, who wrote a story with that title in 1982.

Bladerunner

The film Bladerunner directed by Ridley Scott is released. It is the definitive cyberpunk movie that questions what it is to be human, juxtaposed by machines without emotions.

Software

Rudy Rucker's novel Software is released. Rucker is a co-editor of a scientific journal called Speculations in Science and Technology. His first light-hearted novel, Spacetime Donuts , appeared in an American science fiction magazine in 1978.

A "cyberpunks" panel convenes at the National Science-Fiction Convention in Austin, Texas. Panelists are Rudy Rucker, John Shirley, Bruce Sterling, Lou Shiner and Pat Cadigan.

John Shirley's novel Heatseeker was published. Shirley is not only one of the original authors of cyberpunk, but has actually been the lead singer of several punk bands. Heatseeker was chosen by the Locus Reader's poll as one of the best short story collections of 1989.

Snow Crash was Neal Stephenson's breakthrough cyberpunk novel about a bizarre postmodern civilization on the brink of collapse.

Time Magazine "Cyberpunk"

Time Magazine released a "Cyberpunk" cover story. Real cyberpunks were outraged at this and Billy Idol's CD "Cyberpunk" because the movement was now becoming mainstream--lead to the collapse of the cyberpunk era.
