Historical development of models of the Universe

This is a timeline about the historical development of model of the Universe from 1000BC to today.

Ptolemy

Worked on others works like Aristotle and Hipparchus and told that the earth was the centre of the universe. This was used for the next 1500 years. He said that the planets revolved around earth whilst spinning.

0270 BC-05-25 11:23:35

Eratosthenes

He challenged the idea that the earth was flat. He conducted an experiment to show different shadows from the sun.

0580 BC-09-05 21:30:16

Pythagoras

Was one of the first to use mathematics to challenge, question and support his observations of the stars

1000 BC-01-01 00:00:00

Ancient Greeks

First to closely observe the night sky. Saw Planets moving across the sky. Considered Earch to be flat with celestial sphere surrounding it. Model - Earth-centred

1473-10-21 13:33:30

Nicholas Copernicus

He was the first one to replace Ptolemy's theory of the earth being at the centre to the sun being at the centre with all the planets revolving around it.

1564-01-08 06:00:28

Galileo Galilei

"Father of Astonomy" "Father of Science" He built a microscope and used it to look at the sky and provided evidence that contradicted Aristotles model.

1571-05-19 06:31:46

Johannes Kepler

He showed that Mars's orbit was not a circle but an ellipse. He prodeuced circular laws: 1. The law of Ellipses: The orbit of each planet in an ellipse, with the sun at one focus. 2. The law of equal areas: As a planet orbits the sun, its speed changes and as a result a line drawn from a planet to the sun sweeps out equal areas in equal times. 3. The harmonic law: The square of the orbital period, T, of a planet is directly proportional to the cube of its average distance, R, from the Sun

1642-03-28 08:30:49

Sir Isaac Newton

Added to the microscope. He developed the theory that there is a force connecting two things such as you and the earth.

1879-10-12 05:23:30

Albert Einstein

He developed relativity which connected, gravity, space and time. He argued Newtons theory but argued that two objects altered space-time with gravity being the result. For this to be true the earth must be expanding or contracting but like newton he believed in a static universe.

1889-06-15 12:07:27

Edwin Hubble

Created the Hubble telescope. He discovered that the universe was expanding through discovering other milky ways. Through the Doppler Effect he found out that the planets and other galaxy's were moving away from us, thus the universe was expanding.

1894-04-17 15:59:26

George Lemaitre

He challenged Einstein that the universe was expanding and proved this through mathematics.
