SixDegrees.com started the new era of the modern social networks. It used a real identity of its users. The name of this social network comes from famous psychologist Stanley Milgram. He works with the idea that every person in the world is connected. Six degrees means 6 people who you know.This is the hypothetical distance between two people. However, SixDegrees was very badly timed. In 1997 servers were expensive, slow and had other restrictions.
