The Railway and Pioneers

John and Mary (Hutchison) Lea moved to the area now known as Leaside. Three railway companies also moved to the area.

Trains, Planes, Automobiles, WWI, Incorporation

The Canadian Northern Railway planned and incorporated the Town of Leaside in 1913, making it the first planned community in Ontario. World War One had a major influence on the area with a military training site and munitions factory. The post war years brought industrial and infrastructure growth. Influencial industries included Canada Wire and Cable, and Durant Motors. Cultural highlights were the Toronto Flying Club and Thorncliffe Racetrack.

Building Boom, WWII

This period experienced a large building boom of homes along with schools, churches, and libraries. The video highlights the architecure of the buildings and the builders. During this short time a full and active community developed.

Building North, Thorncliffe Park, Amalgamation with Toronto

Leaside continues to build and fills all residential land areas with housing. Thorncliffe Park is developed where the racetrack stood. The industial area thrives. Leaside culture continues to grow. In 1998, Leaside amalgamates with the City of Toronto.
