Garfield memorial Library
After the assassination of President James A. Garfield in 1881, his wife Lucretia set forth to create a memorial library in their Mentor, Ohio home. This library, interpreted today as the first informal Presidential library, housed Garfield's personal and professional papers, as well as his books. His papers have since been moved to the Library of Congress, but his books (nearly 2,000 of them) remain at the home.

Hayes presidential center
Webb Hayes, the second son of Lucy and President Rutherford Hayes, is often recognized for creating the first Presidential Library at the Hayes home in Fremont, Ohio.

FDR presidential library
President Franklin Roosevelt was the first President to request that the Federal Government take custody of his personal and Presidential papers. Thus, the FDR Presidential Library is recognized as the first that was administered by the National Archives and Records Administration.

Presidential Libraries Act 1955
This Federal Act created provisions for independently built, but Federally maintained Presidential Libraries. This law encouraged Presidents to donate their papers to the government, and promised that they would be preserved and made available to the public.

Just last month, the George W. Bush Presidential Library was dedicated in Dallas, Texas.
