With the internet becoming more and more popular, different uses for it began in 1997. The internet had been used almost solely for email but now blogging and instant messaging have started.

In 2002, AOL reached 34 million members while the first social network, Friendster, was created and had 3 million users within the first 3 months. Friend was a sit where users could post photos and make lists of friends.

Competition of Social media sites

Myspace was launched in 2003 as an almost exact replica of friendster.

More Competition

Facebook launched by Harvard students was seen as the college version of Myspace and Friendster. Myspace continued to rise in users, now passing Friendster's page views.

Social media continues to rise

A new 'micro-blogging' site called Twitter is launched. Users can tweet 140 character or less posts. Facebook created a high school version and became open to anyone over the age of 13 years old.

Facebook and Twitter begin takeover

Facebook, now surpassing Myspace in total users and page views, becomes most used social media network in the world. Breaking news about the plane crash on the Hudson River broke via Twitter. This demonstrated the capabilities of social media for the public and media sources.
