Albright-Knox Art Gallery: Past Exhibitions, 1963-2012

The exhibition history for the Buffalo Fine Arts Academy and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery from 1963-present.

The Albright-Knox Art Gallery's 150-year tradition of collecting, conserving, and exhibiting the art of its time has given rise to one of the world’s most extraordinary art collections. Thomas Hoving, art historian and former director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, said that "the Albright-Knox Art Gallery should be on everyone’s list to see, for it’s an overwhelming art experience. Small, intimate, and seductive, the museum has one of the most thumping modern and contemporary collections in the world.";xNLx;;xNLx;All textural information stated in this time line © The Buffalo Fine Arts Academy, Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, N.Y.

The Dutch Contribution to the International Development of Art Since 1945

January 14, Netherlands Ambassador Jan Herman van Roijen and his wife attended the special opening of the exhibition, "The Dutch Contribution to Art Since 1945." Prior to the opening a dinner was given in the Ambassador's honor by the Board of Directors, and the Ambassador was introduced to the Gallery's guests by Franciscus Visser't Hooft, honorary consul of the Netherlands in Erie and Niagara counties. The largest and most explosive exhibition of Dutch art ever assembled and displayed in America, this exhibition clearly pointed up the resurgence of art in the Netherlands since the Second World War. The handsome catalogue for the Dutch exhibition was designed by Dr. W. J. H. B. Sandberg, who recently retired as director of the Stedelijk Museum of Amsterdam and Was one of the Gallery's special guests at the January, 1962, dedication ceremonies. The catalogue for this exhibition, printed in Dutch, French, and English, was designed by Dr. Sandberg and printed in the Netherlands.

The 27th Annual Western New York Exhibition

Interrupted for two years during construction and renovation at the Gallery, the Western New York Artists Exhibition was resumed during the past year. The jury for the twenty-seventh annual exhibition consisted of Katharine Kuh, art critic of The Saturday Review, author, and former curator of painting at the Art Institute of Chicago; Harry Bertoia, sculptor and designer whose sculptural screen of steel and brass is in the Garden Restaurant; and Hedda Sterne, Romanian-born artist and wife of the artist-cartoonist Saul Steinberg. The jurors were guests at a reception for participating artists on February 4. The opening of the exhibition on February 25, brought out the usual large audience anticipating with great interest the announcement of the prize winners. Owing to the efforts of Mrs. Richard W. More the exhibition was endowed with $3,750 in prizes, the largest amount ever offered. Mr. Lars Potter, the Gallery's Treasurer, awarded the prizes in the Sculpture Court. Top award was won by Charity Roberts for her painting "Sonnet". Other prize winners were John L. Hill, Theodore V. Patricola, Dorothy Shea, Harriet Grief, and Fred Meyer. The Western New York exhibition is always a popular show, and this year it attracted over 60,000 visitors.

Fifty California Artists

On April 15, members of The Buffalo Fine Arts Academy and their friends were invited to attend a preview of "Fifty California Artists," an exhibition arranged by the San Francisco Museum of Art with the assistance of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. This exhibition, which drew more than 36,000 visitors before it closed on May 8, was designed to demonstrate the major growth of creative activity on the West Coast, and specifically in California, during the past quarter century. It was intended to provide the means to bring Eastern and Midwestern audiences a substantial view of work being done in California and to place its artistic accomplishments in a more meaningful perspective.

Charles Burchfield: Early Watercolors

In April the Gallery also had the opportunity of participating in an exhibition that served several important functions. On April 24, the Gallery put on view an exhibition of seventy-seven early watercolors, painted between 1915 and 1950, by Charles Burchfield. Thus, the Gallery was able to help to commemorate the artist's seventieth birthday, and to share that honor with State Teachers College of Buffalo, which held a simultaneous exhibition of forty-five more recent water colors. The State Teachers exhibition also marked the opening of a new gallery in the recently completed Upton Hall. Both exhibitions contained works never before shown to the public, and were designed to demonstrate Mr. Burchfield's emergence as one of America's greatest water colorists. Over 40,000 guests viewed the comprehensive survey of early water colors on view at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery.

Sculpture by Julio González

Twenty years after the death of Spanish sculptor Julio Gonzalez, the Galerie Chalette arranged a retrospective exhibition of the work of a distinguished artist who has become a major influence throughout the Western World. The outstanding exhibition of Gonzalez' sculpture opened at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery on May 15, and continued through June 12; many visitors were attracted by the work of an artist whose style remained forever plastic, ranging from the early, realistic studies of peasants through important experiments with cubistic techniques, to the fanciful constructions in sheet metal for which he is perhaps best known.

Mark Tobey: Seattle Marketplace Sketches

To attract crowds of this size, we have had a variety of exhibitions which included works from the 11th through the mid-20th century - a number, in fact, dated 1965. The first, in September, was a traveling exhibition from the Museum of Modern Art: Seattle Market Place Sketches by Mark Tobey. These early works (1939-1945) of the distinguished Northwestern artist were of much interest, particularly since the beginning of his personal style - the sensitive line and "white writing" related to calligraphy - were already apparent.

Children's Books

October 9 was opening day for a small but unusual show of original illustrations for children's books, as well as a display of the published books, from the Dr. Irvin Kerlan Collection at the University of Minnesota. This exhibition was scheduled to coincide with the opening of the new building of the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library and the Academy was host at a reception in our Sculpture Court for the civic leaders and out-of-town guests here for the occasion.

Religious Art from Byzantium to Chagall

The next exhibition was Religious Art from Byzantium to Chagall, originally conceived and researched by Ursula Eland, Curatorial Assistant, and carried on by her successor, Jan von Adlmann, as a cooperative venture with Your Neighbor's Faith, representing the three major religions. We are indebted to the Rt. Rev. Lauriston L. Scaife, Episcopal Bishop of Western New York, and the Most Rev. James A. McNulty, Bishop of Buffalo, for their patronage of the exhibition, to the Rev. Robert S. Sweeny and the Very Rev. Harold B. Robinson for their work as coordinators, and to the Printing Industries of Western New York for their donation of the handsome catalogue. One hundred and thirty-seven painting, sculpture and sacred objects were shown in this exhibition that opened with a concert of sacred music in the Sculpture Court. We should like to make special acknowledgement to Mr. George R. Hann of Sewickley Heights, Pennsylvania, for his generosity in allowing us to choose freely from his large collection of rare objects of exquisite beauty.

A Flexagon of Sculpture & Design: An Exhibition of the Work of Arthur A. Carrara

A very different exhibition from any other of the season was that of Arthur Carrara's work, entitled "A Flexagon of Sculpture and Design". This well-known architect and designer included furniture, toys, paper sculpture and prints, as well as architectural drawings and models, in the show which he installed himself in handsome manner.

Art Today: Kinetic & Optic

Art Today, the special exhibit organized by the Gallery for the Festival of the Arts Today, was composed of 84 kinetic and optic sculptures and paintings and marked the first time in this country that a public art gallery had exhibited the two movements simultaneously. Forty-eight artists (two-thirds of them European, since these movements have received their greatest impetus abroad) were represented in Art Today, among them Nicolas Schoeffer who came here from Paris to install his works. (This was the first presentation of M. Schoeffer's work in this country, although he is well-known in Europe.) Time and space do not permit a complete listing here of all the artists whose works had such an electric impact upon the 313,042 visitors to Art Today. It must suffice to say that it was a veritable roster of the leaders in this new development in contemporary art - a development, often utilizing new materials, that involves the spectator to a degree unprecedented in any art movement. For instance, anyone entering the room where Schoeffer's Chronos 5 was installed, found himself literally inside the sculpture as the moving colored lights and shadows were projected on him and on the walls around him. In the case of the paintings, they are designed so that the optic nerves have a positive and involuntary reaction. The sculptures and constructions react to touch, to color, to heat and light, and change with the position of the viewer in relation to the work. A large percentage of the works in Art Today were motorized - installing and, even more importantly, maintaining this show in working order were certainly new and, at times, very trying experiences for the staff. It has been suggested that the next generation of museum personnel may need engineering degrees, in addition to traditional training, in preparing for the kinetic era.

"Arrangement in Grey and Black, No. 1: Portrait of the Artist's Mother" by James Abbott McNeill Whistler. Lent by the Musee du Louvre, Paris

In the midst of all the motion, color and sound of "Art Today," we were privileged to exhibit Whistler's "Arrangement in Gray and Black, No. 1; Portrait of the Artist's Mother". Among the comments made was that the painting was installed in the Sculpture Court in such a way that this famous mother sat with her back to the exhibition as though in total disapproval of the sights and sounds of mid-20th century art. We were, of course, most pleased to have had the opportunity to show this eminent painting, on loan from the Louvre, and it is thought-provoking to recall that at the time it was painted it was considered as revolutionary as the most startling kinetic sculpture we exhibited in the adjacent galleries.

29th Annual Western New York Exhibition

We were all a bit weary after the Festival, but recovered in time for the opening on April 26th of the 29th Annual Western New York Exhibition. Harris K. Prior, Director of the Memorial Art Gallery of the University of Rochester, and painter Theodoros Stamos comprised the jury which selected 112 paintings, drawings, sculptures and photographs from 1,405 entries. It has been a long tradition at the Gallery to show the works of artists from the region and we are glad to be able to continue in this.

Albert Gleizes, 1881-1953: A Retrospective Exhibition

Our summer exhibition was a retrospective show of the work of Albert Gleizes, which opened on June 2. This offered a rare opportunity to study the work of one of the first important Cubist painters and we were justifiably proud that our own Gleizes, "Man in a Hammock", was included in the exhibition which traveled widely for a year.

American Folk Art from the Shelburne Museum

In December and January, we exhibited 162 examples of American Folk Art from the Shelburne Museum which was the first time that Museum had agreed to a large loan exhibition. Trade signs, bandboxes, quilts, rugs, carvings, and weathervanes were shown. In 1932, the Albright Art Gallery presented the first museum exhibition of American folk art; it was appropriate to have another such exhibition since interest in our native arts has increased so markedly during the intervening years.

100 Masterpieces from Montreal

(100 Masterpieces form Montreal) was a traveling exhibition of one hundred paintings by old masters as well as contemporary painters. The latter was particularly important for us since the late Mr. Goodyear gave the Gallery, both during his lifetime and by bequest, 361 gifts. The exhibition was planned to reflect Mr. Goodyear's taste and judgement as a collector and consisted of works selected from the Gallery's Collection, augmented by loans from other institutions and individuals.

In September, we opened a major exhibition of the season, Acquisitions 1962-1965, in which we showed 297 works by 184 artists which were added to the collection during that four-year period. Approximately one-half of the group is dated in the 1960's, indicating the Gallery's continued interest in contemporary art. The rate of acquisition is demonstrated by the fact that these 297 works of art constitute one-seventh of our entire collection.
