Doors open for the new east Austin high school
The school known as Johnston High School lets out for summer for the last time after the state forced it to close due to continuing poor performance. It becomes the second forced school closure of Texas.
The old Johnston High School re-opens as Eastside Memorial High School at the Johnston Campus.
Austin ISD Superintendent Meria Carstarphen announces possible plans for Eastside Memorial High School and Allan Elementary, a feeder school for Eastside Memorial, to managed by IDEA Charter School.
AISD Board of Trustees approve the proposal for a contract with the Rio Grande Valley charter school. IDEA set to manage Eastside Memorial HS and Allan Elementary. An unsatisfied community opposes decision, leading to protests and extended public hearings.
AISD Board of Trustees decides to cancel the contract with IDEA Charter School for the management of Eastside Memorial HS, Allan Elementary, and all other feeder schools.
AISD board members rule out the option of partnering back up with IDEA Charter School.
The board will meet for their general monthly meeting and hopes to be more prepared to handle situation. Possible action with new partner to occur.
Superintendent Carstarphen will bring the trustees' proposal to the Texas Education Commissioner Michael L. Willams. The two will deliberate and reach a decision before the end of the school year.
Meeting for the last time of the 2012-2013 school year, AISD Board of Trustees must have a decision made regarding the future of Eastside Memorial High School.
