In 1962, Steve Russell invented SpaceWar!. It was the first game intended for computer use. Russell used a MIT PDP-1 mainframe computer to design his game.
In 1964, the first prototype computer mouse was made to use with a graphical user interface (GUI), 'windows'. Douglas Engelbart received a patent for the wooden shell with two metal wheels. It was nicknamed the mouse because the tail came out the end. Engelbart changed the way computers worked and created user-friendly tool that almost anyone can use. He invented or contributed to several interactive, user-friendly devices: the computer mouse, windows, computer video teleconferencing, hypermedia, groupware, email, the Internet and more.
On a cold war kind of day, in swinging 1969, work began on the ARPAnet, grandfather to the Internet.
In 1971, IBM introduced the first "memory disk", as it was called then, or the "floppy disk" as it is known today.
In 1975, Gates and Allen form a partnership called Microsoft. Like most start-ups, Microsoft begins small, but has a huge vision—a computer on every desktop and in every home. During the next years, Microsoft begins to change the ways we work.
April 1, 1976, Apple Computer was founded by Steven Wozniak and Steven Jobs.
WordPefect software was invented in 1979. This is the first computer software that I ever learned and used extensively. I began using WordPerfect in high school in 1989. I also used this software in my first job after high school.
Lotus 1-2-3 was invented in 1983. This is the first spreadsheet software I used in high school in 1990.
A transparent computer that allows users to reach inside and touch digital content allowing people to interact with machines in the same way they do with solid objects could make computing much more intuitive.
