At the ALA Annual Conference in St. Louis, 13 college librarians recommend that a college library section be formed within ALA.

First College Library Section Meeting

At the ALA Annual Conference in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, 15 academic librarians hold the first meeting of the College Library Section.

Reference Librarians Included

The Section name changes to the College and Reference Library Section to recognize the participation of reference librarians.

Sections Formed

The College Libraries Section, Junior College Libraries Section (now CJCLS), Libraries of Teacher-Training Institutions Section (now EBSS), Reference Librarians Section, and University Libraries Section were formed.

First C&RL Published

The first issue of College & Research Libraries is published in December.

Phineas L. Windsor

Phineas L. Windsor serves as the first president of ACRL as a division.

The Agricultural Libraries Section (now STS) is formed.

The ALA Council recognizes ACRL as ALA’s first division on May 31, 1940.

Mabel L. Conat becomes the first female president of ACRL.

N. Orwin Rush

N. Orwin Rush, the librarian of Clark University, is hired as the first ACRL executive director.
