Shortly after the United States experienced a stock market crash in September and October of 1929, many of the world's richest countries experienced economic trouble. During this time period, Seattle's Jewish population experienced a significant demographic shift. While Jews settled in downtown Seattle prior to the Great Depression, many decided to leave during this time as many of Seattle's wealthiest Jews struggled to generate income during the 1930s in the downtown area.

One of Seattle's biggest Jewish Charity organizations continuously receives less and less donation money as a result of the Great depression and by November 14th of 1933 is forced to cut back spending by 20 percent.

Seattle's Neighborhood House struggles to pay bills

Seattle's Neighborhood House announces in a meeting that the organization does not have enough money to pay building insurance. This was a result of declining community fund allotment. While organization raised $8,400 in 1926, that number was reduced to $6,600 by 1933 and $4,770 by 1935.

A 1939 Roper poll found that only 39% of Americans believed that Jews should be treated like other people. 10% of Americans at this time also believed that Jews should be deported.
