Illinois Glaciers

Illinois glaciers are about 700 feet thick. Glaciers did not melt in the summers. The summers were like a polar vortex. They lasted for more than a thousand years. More than 13 animals got extinct from the ice age. The glaciers flattened the land for Illinois. Which made farm land and prairie

Starved Rock

There is a legend about a group of Illinoisan Indians got trapped on starved rock attacked by an Ottawa indian tribe and were surrounded. Most of them starved to death there. that is how it got it’s name. Starved rock is located along the south bank of the Illinois river. Less than 100 miles from Chicago.

Cahokia

It is a old city built by Native Americans tribe called Cahokians. They were a part of the bigger Illiniwek tribe. Their city was lived in from 700 to 1400 It is near Collinsville, Illinois. There were 120 mounds and houses where arranged in rows and around open plazas, and vast agricultural fields lay outside the city. Today it is a historical site for anyone to visit and find out what Native American did a long time ago.

Illinois Earthquakes And Rising River

The first earthquake on December 1811 was so bad, it changed the way the Mississippi River went in some places. It started at 2:15 A.M. That winter two more earthquakes struck. The dates were January 23 and February 7. The Mississippi River rose higher. It was so high, some of the river was going backwards! One earthquake was on the New Madrid Fault and shook Illinois and the rest of the Midwest!

In 1812 there was another war between the USA and Great Britain. On August 15, 1812, the Potawatomi attacked soldiers who were running from Fort Dearborn.

Working the land/ farmer's miracle.

Cyrus McCormick and John Deere were people who invented machines to destroy weeds with big roots, Weeds with big roots were taking up farmland and in Illinois most of the state was farms. First John Deere created the steel hoe. A hoe is a tool that pulls weeds and digs dirt. Then McCormick invented the reaper that helped farmers to plow the prairie land in Illinois and other midwest prairies.

The Black Hawk War

The Black Hawk war was a war between the Native American fox tribe and the french explorers in 1832. It was in Northern Illinois. It happened because the indians had the right to live on the land and the french explorers had taken it from them. So, the Native Americans got mad and attacked.

In 1857 a person named Owen Lovejoy created the Underground railroad. This happened in Alton-Illinois. They did this for fugitive slaves to escape from the North to Canada from the Civil war.It is an organized system that ended in the late 18th century.For slaves running to the North it was anything but easy. The Civil war started in 1861 and ended in 1865 in the spring. Illinois sent 259,092 people to the Civil War. The Civil War took place in southern Pennsylvania to Texas. Ulysses S. Grant was the general for the Union army.
