SLCC History

This Interactive Timeline documents the history and evolution of the Salt Lake Community College from its beginnings as Salt Lake Area Vocational School thru the 21st century. Major events in the evolution of the College are highlighted as well as resources from the SLCC Digital Archives such as photographs, online articles, and audiovisual materials. We invite you to peruse this interactive timeline to gain a new perspective about the history of the College.

The resources under the "Audiovisual Material" category are analog out-moded objects from the Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) Physical Archives digitized in Fall 2013 with funds provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services through the Library Services and Technology Act administered by the Utah State Library.

Center for Arts and Media Grand Opening

Salt Lake Community College’s new Center for Arts and Media grand opening. MacArthur genius award recipient Bill Strickland helped kick off events November 7 with a keynote address at South City Campus’ Grand Theatre.

New Interim Dean, School of Humanities & Social Sciences

Dr. David Richardson returns to SLCC as Interim Dean of the School of Humanities & Social Sciences.

LGBTQ+ Pride Crosswalk

Rainbow crosswalk unveiled at the Taylorsville Redwood Campus, in honor of LGBTQ+ Pride.

New Respiratory Therapy Program

As of Spring 2018, SLCC School of Health Sciences offers a Respiratory Therapy Program at Jordan Campus.

New Asst.VP for Student Development

Kathryn Coquement is named the new Assistant Vice President for Student Development, effective November 1st.

Mortuary Science AAS degree

Salt Lake Community College is offering a new AAS degree in mortuary science. There is no other school that offers this degree in the surrounding states of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho.

Dr. Deneece Huftalin Appointed Interim President

The Utah Board of Regents has appointed Dr. Deneece Huftalin,vice president of SLCC Student Services, as the new interim president at Salt Lake Community College.

SLCC Holds Peace Officer Graduation Ceremony

SLCC’s 71st POST graduating class includes four women and twenty-five men. Two have U.S. military experience. Five graduates have already secured jobs with public safety agencies, and many others are currently involved in the selection process. The graduation was held at the Miller Campus, Free Enterprise Center (MFEC) auditorium.

Barbering and Cosmetology Program Cancelled

The Barbering and Cosmetology program at SLCC is no longer offered.
