In celebration of WML's 20th Anniversary in 2012, the Library has created a timeline to highlight significant milestones and events. ;xNLx;;xNLx;[Weinberg Memorial Library Website](http://matrix.scranton.edu/academics/wml/index.shtml);xNLx;;xNLx;Opened in 1992, the holdings of our 80,000-square-foot, five-story library building include 499,289 volumes of books, bound journals and microfilm, and 35,296 full-text online and print journals. The Library conducts an extensive information literacy program to orient and instruct students on resources and research techniques. A [video tour](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yEBLuTtpWbo&feature=player_embedded) of the building and its services is available on our home page. ;xNLx;;xNLx;The facility includes the following special features:;xNLx;;xNLx; * group-study rooms and quiet study areas;;xNLx; * a 24-hour study room (Pro Deo Room) with computer lab and Java City coffee bar;;xNLx; * a new, second 24-hour study space on the 1st floor;;xNLx; * a quiet study room on the 4th floor;;xNLx; * a 5th floor reading room (Scranton Heritage Room) overlooking the campus and community;;xNLx; * University Archives and Special Collections, which houses University historical records, rare books, faculty publications and other special collections; and;xNLx; * a Media and EDLAB Resources Collection that holds 16,257 non-print items.;xNLx;;xNLx;The Library offers 150 online databases accessible wherever there is an Internet connection. There are 83 Internet workstations in the Library, including 46 machines available 24 hours a day, seven days a week on the Library’s 1st floor. Wireless connection to the Internet is available throughout the building via laptops. Fifteen laptops and three iPad2 tablets are available for checkout at the circulation desk located on the 1st floor. In addition to these machines, students may use ResNet ports to plug personal laptops into the network on the first floor. Users can consult librarians via our “Ask a Librarian” services, which include Email, Instant Messaging or Text Messaging (text your questions to 570-687-8787). We also offer a 24/7 chat reference service, through which students, faculty and staff can get research help from a librarian from the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU) and Tutor.com, at any hour of the day.
With the support of the Board of Trustees, the University formed a committee and intensive planning began for a new library, including a community-wide forum to explain the program, planning schedule, and site selection.
The New Library Committee proposed a new library be constructed on Galvin Terrace at the foot of the Commons.
Harry Weinberg donated $6 million to University of Scranton; $5 million of which went to building a new library; $1 million to the Judaic Studies Institute.
The Board of Trustees paved the way for construction on the Galvin Terrace site and the final building designs.
At the Celebration of the Unity of Faiths the Board of Trustees determined to name the building in honor of Harry and Jeanette Weinberg as a symbol of University’s Judeo-Christian heritage.
The Gateway to the Future campaign was initiated, and final plans for the new library were unveiled. The campaign had a goal of $13.3 million for the construction of the new library. Edward B. Fiske was the Keynote Speaker.
Groundbreaking Ceremonies took place on the University Commons at Monroe Avenue and Linden Street.
The collection was moved from Alumni Memorial to WML. The Library was closed for the week, and patrons were referred to Scranton Public Library and Marywood College. National Library Relocations assisted with the move.
An evening reception was held in the Heritage Room of WML for faculty, staff, and spouses on the eve of the library's doors being opened to the public.
