Project Timeline is created by Coastal Technology Corporation as a service to the Port of Bay City
Work on project had commenced on 10 September 2011. Centerline of channel had been staked and cleared. Work in progress consisted on clearing of the Placement Area.
Work in Progress at Site: One day of work had been lost to rain the past week. Work in progress consisted of the clearing of an area between the existing placement area levee and proposed channel station 17+00 at the south end of the proposed channel. The area is to be used as a mat lay-down area. It was suggested to the Contractor that excavated materials should not be pushed too close to the channel bank as runoff from the slopes could result in turbidity in the Old River. The area is currently not protected by a turbidity curtain.
Work in Progress at Site: Excavation of channel to elevation +3.0. Amount of excavation being realized is 3,666 cy per day. Pull-out test for RCB anchors. Tests were performed on a back slope cut below +3.0 to assimilate the turndown of the RCB. Needed pull-out resistance was 3600 lbs; maximum realized was 1890 lbs. The test was run about 10 times with anchors embedded at depths of 4, 6 and 8 feet. Most test results were 500-1000 lbs. All anchors were embedded in a layer of soft clay.
Work in Progress at Site: Excavation of channel to elevation – 4.0 between approximate stations 6+00 and 8+00; unloading of 8x29-foot ACB mattresses at staging area across GIWW form Matagorda Harbor. Notes: Material being encountered from approximate elevation 0.0 to -4.0 is soft grey silty clay. The cut had been open about 24 hours and very little seepage had been observed. Seven stacks of mattresses, each about 14 mats high, had been unloaded. At least a dozen rolls of Mirafi 600X filter cloth were also on hand at this location and the signs identifying the project at the intersections of the proposed new channel with the Diversion Channel and the Old River are in place.
Work in Progress at Site: Excavation of channel (in the dry) to elevation – 4.0 between approximate stations 5+00 and 5+50; unloading of 8x29-foot ACB mattresses at staging area across GIWW from Matagorda Harbor; initial transportation of mats to site by barge. Notes: The channel bottom has been excavated to -4.0 between approximate stations 6+00 and 11+00. This reach had been flooded by rains on October 9 and the water was being pumped out. Material being encountered from approximate elevation 0.0 to -4.0 is still soft grey silty clay. Very little seepage is still being observed. About 10 truckloads of ACB mattresses are being delivered each day. The first load of mats was barged to the site this day and was being unloaded. About 56 mattresses were on the barge. In conversation with Mr. Sanders, the top of the mattresses in the channel bottom will be elevation -4.0. Mr. Sanders believes there will be sufficient room in the placement area to contain all the excavated materials.
Work in Progress at Site: Excavation of lower 4:1 channel slopes between approximate stations 5+00 and 6+00; unloading of 8x29-foot ACB mattresses at staging area across GIWW from Matagorda Harbor. Notes: The channel bottom has been excavated to -4.0 between approximate stations 5+00 and 11+50. No seepage can be seen from the channel side slopes but about 6 inches of water exists in the channel bottom. About 3/4 of ACB mattresses have been delivered.
Work in Progress at Site: Placement of filter cloth on channel bottom at approx. station 6+50 and receipt of ACB mats by truck across GIWW from harbor at Matagorda Boat Basin. Notes: The channel bottom has been excavated to -4.0 between approximate stations 5+00 and 11+50. No seepage can be seen from the channel side slopes but about 6 inches of water exist in the channel bottom. Mats have been placed on the northern one half of the channel bottom between approx. stations 5+50 and 10+50. Almost all of ACB mattresses have been delivered.

Work in Progress at Site: Cabling of mats in channel bottom, receipt of ACB mats by truck across GIWW from harbor at Matagorda Boat Basin, grading of berm area above lower channel slopes. Notes: The channel bottom has been excavated to -4.0 between approximate stations 5+00 and 11+50. No seepage can be seen from the channel side slopes but a few inches of water exist in the channel bottom. Mats have been placed on the channel bottom between approx. stations 5+50 and 10+50. Mat placement is good with only slight undulations noticed. Almost all of ACB mattresses have been delivered.
